    I invite you to read this report Contract & Grant Awards, fiscal year 2006, which lists contract and grant (C&G) awards received by the University of New Mexico (UNM) during the period from July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006 (FY06). These awards represent new funds that were acquired during FY06 by the main campus, branch campuses and education centers, and the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The HSC includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy. The awards received for FY06 total 298.6M,ofwhich298.6M, of which 165.4M is attributed to the main campus and $133.2M to HSC. These awards assist in providing resources that are necessary to support and enhance the quality of research and teaching at UNM, as well as the opportunities for students to be trained in state-of-the-art laboratories in a variety of disciplines

The awards received for FY01 total 235.7M,ofwhich235.7M, of which 147.2M is attributed to the main campus and $88.5M to HSC. These awards assist in providing resources that are necessary to support and enhance the quality of research and teaching at UNM, as well as the opportunities for students to be trained in state-of-the-art laboratories in a variety of disciplines. Please join me in thanking our dedicated faculty, staff and students involved in the sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at UNM. It is their successful endeavors that enhance the University\u27s visibility at the national and international levels, as well as contribute to the economic growth of New Mexico and the region.     It is a pleasure for me to release this 1998 annual report, which summarizes the University of New Mexico\u27s (UNM) sponsored activities for fiscal year 1998 (i.e., July 1, 1997 - June 30, 1998, FY98). The purpose of this report is to present statistics of FY98 sponsored research, public service and instruction efforts at the main campus and Health Sciences Center (HSC). UNM, a Research I Institution, is ranked in the top 50 of the nation\u27s public universities and colleges, based on annual research and development (R&D) expenditures (see p. 11). UNM faculty have continued their commitment to excellence by seeking sponsored project support and producing scholarly and creative works. While the majority of research at UNM is faculty based, there is a noticeable level of activity which involve non-faculty initiatives. The scholarly and creative works are listed in Faculty Publications and Creative Works and the details of contract and grant activities are compiled in the Contract and Grant Awards Report, both of which are published annually by the Office of Research Services. The awards received for FY98 total 175.8M,ofwhich175.8M, of which 121.3M is attributed to the main campus. These awards assist in providing resources that are necessary to improve the quality of research and teaching at UNM. They also enhance the opportunities for students to be trained in state-of-the-art laboratories in a variety of disciplines. During FY98, 5.5Mwaspaidto540graduatestudentsforresearchassistantships.UNMcenterscontinuetoflourishandpromoteinterdisciplinaryresearch.Theyacquired5.5M was paid to 540 graduate students for research assistantships. UNM centers continue to flourish and promote interdisciplinary research. They acquired 38M in awards and were responsible for supporting numerous faculty, staff and students from a broad spectrum of disciplines on campus. Terminology pertinent to this report include the following: contract and grant (C&G) awards - new funds that were acquired during FY98; expenditures - expenses incurred with respect to C&G awards in effect during FY98; facilities and administrative costs (F+A), formerly known as indirect costs (IDC) - overhead funds that were generated as a result of expenditures incurred during FY98. Please join me in thanking our dedicated faculty, staff and students involved in the research, public service and instruction efforts at UNM. It is their successful endeavors that enhance UNM\u27s visibility at the national and international levels, as well as contribute to the economic growth of New Mexico and the region. Thanks are also due to a number of individuals who have helped in preparing this report.     One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty\u27s scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 1998 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University\u27s laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during 1998 produced over 2,457 works, including 1,990 scholarly papers and articles, 69 books, 98 book chapters, 119 reviews, 165 creative works and 16 patents. We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty which are in part reflected in this book, which illustrates the diversity of intellectual pursuits in support of research and education at the University of New Mexico.
